4 Things To Do If Your Air Conditioner Won’t Turn On

When the hot months hit, you rely on your air conditioner to get you through the warmth. If you live in an area that can get particularly hot, then an air conditioner is much more than just a luxury, but rather a necessity.

Finding yourself in the middle of a heatwave with a unit that won’t turn on is the reason for calling a repairman in a panic. If you find yourself with an AC that won’t turn on, then take a look at some of the potential reasons why.

Check Your Circuit Breaker

Sometimes it’s as simple as starting with the basics. In some cases, there may not be any problem with your air conditioner at all, but rather a lack of power. Check your circuit breaker and see if it’s a potential electrical problem.

In certain cases, a plug may have come loose. Before you assume that it’s your unit that has a problem, always check if the problem may not be something even simpler.

Check Your Filter

It’s important that you replace your filters regularly despite it being a seemingly unnecessary task. Your filters play an important role in how well your HVAC system performs. Over time, dust and other particles will start to cause problems for your filter.

When your filter doesn’t work, it will cause your unit to break down and fail at its job. In the event that your AC isn’t working, take a look at your filter and check whether it’s looking dirty.

Check The Coils

Just like your filter needs to be cleaned, so do your evaporator coils. Not only should you change your filters regularly, but you should also look inside to ensure that your coils are clean while you’re at it. If you notice that if your air conditioning isn’t working and you also notice that your coils are significantly dirty, it’s most likely that this is the cause of your problem.

Check Drain Pan

It may not always be obvious how to check your drain pan; therefore, you may want to consult with a specialist first. Asking a specialist to demonstrate how your drain pan works is the best way to know whether it’s full or not. When it is too full, it will stop your air conditioner from working. This is because it may trigger a float switch telling your air conditioner it’s too full.

Although you may be able to determine the cause of the problem on your own, it is recommended to rely on a professional to make any repairs or maintenance work on your air conditioner. Doing so will ensure a long and healthy life of your air conditioning system, and avoid wasting your money on a purchase that doesn’t last.
