Witchwood Estate, Going Home by Patti Roberts #WeeklyShorts

Weekly Shorts No.5

Weekly Shorts started off because I wanted a weekly meme to show off short stories and novellas. I noticed a plethora of them being produced and also noticed not many folks were reviewing or sharing them. Everyone is writing and reading and reviewing those cute-length novels right around 200-250 pages. These are fine, short reads for me, but occasionally I want a short story to read while at the doctor’s office, or on a Sunday afternoon after brunch and before I start making supper (or get down and dirty slaughtering dragons and bandits with my honey).

The day of the short story is coming back, I know it is. People are already starting to get reacquainted with the art of a short. But what is really exciting is the art of the serial novel. Written in segments and doled out to us bit by bit and making sure they are able to write the hook to keep us coming back for more. Amazon allows you to buy a serial now and the new one is delivered straight to your inbox, I am reading a sexy one right now with those hot alpha male shifters I recently admitted I am getting into. But those are short stories that can be woven into a full length novel. What about the idea of novella length segments? Today’s Weekly Shorts Review is for one just like this.

Next Week on Witchwood Estates…

REVIEW

First off for those of you who are already Patti Roberts fans of her Paradox series, you will know she is a spectacularly imaginative and beautiful author. Where some folks books read like solid dependable working boots, hers read like the gentle and delicate lace adorning your grandmothers couches. They are full of spirit and grace. Each of these types of styles are fine, and I enjoy both. What sets Patti’s into this category is her elegant energy. She truly is a joy to read, and to know. I was thrilled to see her releasing something that I adore, short stories, and to make it better, they were to be part of a whole series.

Sixty-One pages of a splendid short story Now if I read a page per minute that is a hair over an hour of reading, without commercial breaks. Took me a bit longer to finish, but keep up and you will see where I am going with this comparison. The series is slotted to be released one short story at a time, like a TV series, one episode at a time. With each short shining the spotlight into things going on. The first in this is Witchwood Estates – Going Home.

When the scene fades in, our leading girl Alexandri is getting ready to go home to her families estate. She is about to turn 18 and her inheritance needs to be claimed before the home and everything within the estate is lost. Alexandria lost her parents at an early age and was raised by a curious and loving couple, Olly and Martha Barnaby. They taught her about her family heritage, as in she comes from a family of witches and she herself is one too.

All it took was a bit of belief and a drop of  her blood and her mothers  spell book showed it’s secrets. Opening the book opened her to a whole new world. She didn’t have much time for the kids growing up, in fact they teased her so badly she created an invisibility spell so she could grow up and go to school in peace.

This is my first taste of the TV episodic-like flavor promised to us. So, consider this the pilot episode, and I believe this pilot in the world of  whimsy for young-adults and young at heart, as it has been sold. The conventions of the story arc are not complicated. You have good witches, evil witches, wandering spirits.. what will happen next? Well we are going to have to wait till next week month to see!

Witchwood Estates by Patti Roberts

There is something very evil lurking in the woods surrounding Witchwood Estate… Whimsical, “TV” length episodes in an ongoing series. Witches, spells, ghosts, sprites, shape-shifters, wolves and more… For all those young at heart… Equal measure of both Magic and Evil.

Alexandria Santorini learns as a child that she comes from a long line of Harvey witches. Now, as a teenager, Alexandria must say goodbye to Catnip Cottage and the Barnabys, her loving guardians for the last twelve years, and go home to Ferntree Falls to claim her inheritance. Witchwood Estate. The home where she was born and her parents were murdered. Her journey home becomes somewhat sinister, however, when she discovers that there are those who have other plans for her and her new friends…

  1. Stephen King was once again an early adopter with this sort of thing’s resurgence, with The Green Mile. John Scalzi is currently releasing a serial novel–the Human Division–so I expect we’ll start to see more of these from more “traditional” publishers as well. Kudos to Patti for jumping in with both feet! These sound really interesting.

    • thank you Katy! I would love your opinion. If you would like to review, please let me know 🙂 Patti

      • Thanks, Patti, but I still haven’t managed to finish your last series (sorry!). if I ever manage to catch up… O.O
