The Book of Em…Emlyn Chand, That is! (Q & A)

Today I am thrilled to have Emlyn Chand at the Cabin to talk a bit about herself. Which is really hard to do, she is usually talking about her books, her writing, her projects and her birds.. wait her dogs… but her? This is a hard one to nail down! Plus she is so lovely and energetic and all over place… just like a bird…. I adore her, her writing and I am really excited because I am going to be reading her latest one Torn Together this weekend, which is not a children’s or a YA book but woman’s lit!

Getting her to settle down after her trek through the woods was a bit hard,  but well worth the try! I have a pint of chocolate ice cream and a pound of Miniature Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and I separated all the red M&M’s in their own bowl. So, I think I will be able to keep her sitting long enough to have all relevant topics covered … unless someone sends another really funny photo on Facebook or Ducky starts eating my books!

The Book of Em...Emlyn Chand, That is! (Q & A)

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

Past. I’m too worried going to the future would ruin life for me. I mean, what if humanity’s destroyed itself? Then how do you keep living in your present time knowing doom and gloom is on its way? One ticket back in time please!

If you were a superhero what would your name be?

HyperSpeed—because that’s how I live my life. If I want to get something done, I get it done. Okay, I procrastinate *a little bit* on Facebook. Okay, a lot a bit, but I still do manage to get a crazy amount accomplished. I’ve been asked more than once whether (a) I have a clone army or (b) I ever sleep. HyperSpeed to the rescue. Zoooom!

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?

Ooo, I’d love to be the master of time and space—that isn’t too much to ask for, is it? I promise not to abuse my newfound powers, but—c’mon—being able to travel great distances in a microsecond or to actually pack more hours into my busy work day would be awesome!

If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be?

Facebook. The villain could distract me with an interesting comment thread or funny photo and then sneak right on by to destroy the world.

If you could be one of the Greek Gods, which would it be and why?

Um, hello, I am Athena—did you not realize this already? ๐Ÿ˜‰

When you were little, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?

When I was really little, I planned on being a zoo keeper. In elementary school, I was going to be a Disney animator. In high school, I was going to be a lawyer. And in my early years of college, I was going to be Ambassador to Russia ๐Ÿ™‚

Favorite Food?

Ice cream! No… Taco Bell. No, tiramisu. No! Ice cream, definitely ice cream!

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Chocolate, of course, but not just plain chocolate—chocolate with lots of chunky goodness mixed in like nuts, marshmallows, cookie pieces, cookie dough, anything nummy.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?

Things I should not eat for breakfast like candy and ice cream. I also enjoy toaster waffles with a drizzle of honey on them.

One food you would never eat?

I have a pretty adventurous palate. I can’t think of any foods that gross me out, but I refuse to eat veal for emotional reasons. I tried once and ended up crying the whole meal.

Skittles or M&Ms?

M&Ms, 100%. And to take that further peanut M&Ms. I love the candy so much, I gave them an important role in Open Heart. No really, I did!

Favorite Candy?

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups—the miniature ones, because I swear they taste different than the big ones!

(this guy agrees with Emlyn)

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world, which would it be?

Harry Potter, duh! If Hermoine and Luna had a baby, it would be me. Ponder this for a moment…

Finish the sentence- one book I wish I had written is….

Harry Potter, duh!

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?

JK Rowling—talk about a no brainer!

If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?

Harry Potter, duh! Ask me a difficult question, why dontcha? ๐Ÿ˜‰

QUILLS  (heh…)

Emlyn Chand Talks about her BooksOK …I think I saw her chewing through her restraints, I guess I better let her answer some book and writer related questions!

What inspired you to want to become a writer?

Um, hello! I was born a writer, of course. Just look at my twitter bio: Emlyn Chand emerged from the womb with a fountain pen grasped firmly in her left hand (trust story). In all seriousness, I’ve been writing since before I could write, if you know what I mean. I’ve always loved inventing stories or “tall tales” as my parents call them. Writing became my career about three years ago when the local paper offered me a book review column and the dream fulfillment that came along with it. That gave me the courage and consistency to write novels. Open Heart is my third written, but second published.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

Hearing someone liked my book. Yes, it’s as simple as that. Farsighted has won something like ten awards now, and each of those makes me feel great, because it means someone got what I was trying to do and appreciated it. I also love it when fans email me or connect with me on Twitter and Facebook—those simple little things make my day so bright. Don’t forget to reach out to your favorite authors; we just love it!

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?

Oh, you betcha. I’m really into creating playlists for each of my books. You can check out playlists for Farsighted, Open Heart, and Pitch (which will be release in 2013) at Farsighted’s list is more alta-rock and represents the character Alex; his theme song is “Enter Sandman” by Metallica. Open Heart’s list is primarily Bollywood and represents Simmi; her theme song is “Main Yahaa Hoon” from the movie Veer Zaara.

What’s the craziest writing idea you’ve had?

Most of my ideas are zany! The zaniest is probably the first I ever had. At the tender, innocent age of 15, I started writing a feminist slasher based on Frankenstein—a woman is driven mad with grief and become a serial date killer, murdering men with features that look like those of her deceased husband in an attempt to rebuild him. I was such a simple, sweet kid ๐Ÿ˜‰

PhotobucketIf you were a bird, which one would you be?

Oh, boy did you ever ask the right person this question. Widely known fact, I’m a crazy bird lady. Evidence: my sun conure, Ducky, is the mascot for my business, Novel Publicity. He also has his own blog and is on Twitter, Facebook, and GoodReads. Furthermore, I write a children’s book series called the Bird Brain Books—each volume features a different feathery protagonist. To answer your question, if I could be any bird, I’d be my pet Ducky. He is EXTREMELY spoiled and pretty famous in his own right.

Em—as the short form for Emlyn. Birdie, because I’m a crazy bird lady. Emily, because people get Emlyn wrong, haha. I’ll answer to almost anything, really. You can give me a fun new nickname if you’d like!
