Man-Cold cured by Homemade Szechuan-Style Hot & Sour Soup

How many of you out there have a man who has been sick? I mean really sick, you know dying?! Well I have one and the ManBeast is dying! Just ask him! At one point in time, he wanted me to bring a cot downstairs because had no energy to go sleep in the bed. His reasoning to not go upstairs? He did not want to get germs on the pillow cases. I wish I could have gotten a recording of it because it truly was horrific! Instead I dug through our cupboards and cookbooks and online and ended up piecing together this recipe.

He insisted he was freezing cold, grabbed my arm to have me check, no he is burning up. So perhaps he has a bit more than a man-cold but I think I can safely cancel the call to the hearse. But at the time of me writing this he has now slept, except for when I forced him awake to eat the food, 16 hours.** But if you are not sure, and the doctor says he is infection free? Well just check to see if he has anything like this going on, if he has at least one, go buy yourself some whiskey or perhaps wine or at least a LOT of chocolate because it is going to be one heck of a few days!

  1. He insists he is dying, and believes it.
  2. He moans, whimpers, whines, and shoots over dramatic glances in your direction making sure you are paying attention.
  3. He cannot make it to the counter to get water or reach for his own glass but he can hold it up and shake it at you for more.
  4. He puts on his Carhart hat (stocking), a long sleeve shirt, his extra-large sweatshirt, sweat pants, wool socks, curls up under two blankets and has the cat in his lap and insists he was freezing but now he is burning up.. “I … need…tylenol…”
  5. There is a permanent indentation of the cat on his chest when she is not there, and the chair/couch or bed have began to settle and mold into his body shape.
  6. He insists that he must eat but everything you suggest will either make him vomit, hurt his throat, damage him internally and cause him to bleed from the bowels (yes it is true).
I have no clue how long this is going to last, but I guarantee that I am going to go nuts! BUT I know how to trick him into getting a bit better. I added extra garlic and vinegar plus garlic chili sauce to make sure this man gets better. I have no clue when he will be ok, but I am sure he will become a martyr and drag himself to work in a couple of days. But what I do know is that I have found an absolutely gorgeous new recipe in one of his books. I had to modify it because we are almost out of al fresh vegetables but man oh man! I think if I had some of that chicken left or some tofu I would add it also. But this is what I made and it was yummeh good! Oh and I got to use the last of the chicken stock left over from last weekends chicken and dumplings.

So if your man gets sick, and you really do not want to crack open a can of Campbell’s Soup I suggest you whip this up, it is better for you both, will feed not only the ManBeast at your house, but will make you feel quite warm and fuzzy inside!

Good luck. To both of you.

**HE was SO sick, seriously so I want to add that I adore this man but he gets sick like one, but he did not deserve poking at. He ended up sleeping 29 hours straight except for waking up to croak water…with the cat on his chest. I believe she had by this point thought he was new furniture!

Man-Cold Szechuan-Style Hot and Sour Soup
Serves: about 4 servings (or three if you have a ManBeast)
  • 2½ cups chicken stock (you know the left over you froze when you made your chicken and dumplings?)
  • ½ cup of water
  • ½ cup of dried shitake mushrooms (slices of heaven)
  • ½ can (about 2 ounces) of bamboo shoots
  • 1 tsp of ginger (not dried I use the stuff from a jar)
  • 1 tsp of five spice
  • 4-6 cloves garlic, crushed (I used this many because he is really sick but it is an natural antibiotic so eat up!)
  • 1 dessertspoon soy sauce (I umm need to do dishes?)
  • ¼ teaspoon Cock Sauce (chili garlic sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 spring onions, chopped (If you have them we did and he needed the soup)
  • dried seaweed (SO good for you, RICH in Iron)
  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar (you can use white wine vinegar)
  • 2 tablespoons cornflour
  • 1 egg, beaten slightly
  1. Heat the water up till it is hot,but not boiling (oh you have running water you can just use the tap) add the mushrooms while you prep the rest
  2. In a saucepan, combine the chicken stock, bamboo shoots, ginger, garlic, soy sauce and garlic-chili sauce, . Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer while you assemble the rest of the ingredients.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the cornflour and vinegar, and set aside.
  4. Increase the heat for stock mixture to medium-high, and return to a rolling boil. Add the mushrooms with the water you soaked them in. If they did not come cut into strips & you want them in strips remove them from the water and slice up and add. Return to a boil
  5. Stir in the vinegar and cornflour, immediately drizzling in the egg while stirring slowly with a wooden spoon and in the same direction. DO NOT stir vigorously or use a metal spoon or a whisk, you want to create long strands of egg.
  6. Simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally till the stock has thickened slightly, about 1-2 minutes. We did not have any vegetables but if you have them served with chopped green vegetables over the top or even a little coriander!

  1. Next time my supportive husband is down and out for a sniffle or two, I plan on making this!

    • OH Julie it is SO GOOD, and I thought this was going to be so hard to make. We usually have those quick y soups in the house that you add an egg to because he loves them. But I cannot have them because of the MSG. So I was not going to go through making it only for him, HAH he was so pitifully sick! Seriously no more than 30 minutes to make You could actually make all but the egg and freeze this!

  2. LOL! No, I’m not laughing at him being sick, but damn…it almost sounds like he’s contracted some sort of CONTAGION. Maybe he’s slowly turning a ZOMBIE! “moans, whimpers, whines” yes, sounds like a zombie to me. “vomit, hurt his throat, damage him internally and cause him to bleed from the bowels” – ummhmm, sounds close to my old friend, Jim, who died in Season One of The Walking Dead. Kriss, for your own safety, I think you should get the axe ready….

  3. HAHAHA! He’ll get over it. And if not, you’ll just have to do the right thing and put him down. 😛

Do you have DIRTY EDEN on Kindle already? I told you I’d send you one if not.
    Show me some love!

    • Yep I grabbed it when it was free .. ya know the weekend I was asking about from your blog… cuz I forgot because inside I am really a blond sorority girl!
