Recently I was able to ‘sit down’ and chat with our heroine, Rachel from Sandy Wolter’s new mystery Justice for Emily. Sandy is participating in this month’s Win With eBooks event! (I loved this book and will be writing a review later so watch for it!) 

Kriss – Rachel how do you view food it fits into your life. You have a great, ferocious and delightful appetite and you appreciate what comfort food means!

Rachael – Kriss, it’s so nice to meet someone that loves food as much as I do!  I’m blessed with a good metabolism, thank goodness, but I can’t imagine denying myself food of any kind. 

When I was a child, my mother cooked with love.  It was always a heartwarming experience to sit down at the dinner table and eat her beautiful meals.   It didn’t matter where we were, my mom loved to cook with flair.

I grew up with a wonderful set of parents, I was one of the lucky ones. So many stories surround the dysfunctional aspects of childhood, the damaged people who survive and their fight to find themselves and find their way back to a place of balance. Many of these stories involve the journey to find the love of their lost faith, Doxology is one of these books.

This story is about more than simple familial dysfunction. It is tale of fathers, sons and brothers and a journey back to home to find the lost ties that are of this faith that is so deeply rooted in family. It is a story of these men and the ties that bind them together. Living with a southern man, I can say that food is one way that has always bound his family together. Geoff is an Atheist so faith and belief do not play a part in his life. But come Sunday evening when he is with his family, even if he was not at the church pew that morning,  he can be found breaking bread with them all.

It is the same with my family, we may not agree with our varying beliefs and how we practice them. Or agree with how to raise our children or how we live our lives. But we can all agree to sit down and share a meal. To share our love for each other, to feel the warmth that is not just in the bread we are breaking but in our hearts because despite it all we are family.

JUST in time for Valentine’s Day!

so alone...

It started with me digging through the fridge. I did not feel like making anything within the meal planner. Hoping to find inspiration I started digging around the fridge. In the deli drawer I found this lonely packet of KFC BBQ sauce. I looked down and saw I had a package of pie crust. It all fell into place from there. I had made English Meat Pasties last week. Geoff calls them beef pocket pies, but they are just plain old English Pasties.

Being that I am such a lover of bacon and I live with a southerner I am not ashamed to say I have bacon grease on hand at all times so I can make country gravy any time we want. Honestly my meal planning is usually boring.  I plan ahead for baking and desserts, but meals? It is usually me flying by the seat of my pants. These were a complete win! In no way could I possibly know just how good these would taste.

My eldest turned 23 today. Nathaniel James, my Nino Bambino! Nathan lives in Tacoma doing part-time DJ work and hosting Trivia at a local bar, he has fanboys people! When I posted Willow’s Vegan Chocolate cake I got the idea that I should post my kids favorite recipes for their birthday. Nathan gave me two choices my Chili or Texas Butt Chicken.
