Dixie Divas and a chilled glass of Sweet Tea (review and a recipe)

Posted by on Feb 27, 2012 in Books, Cabin Cooking, DIY Basic Recipes, Reviews | 1 comment

It has been one heck of a crazy weekend at the cabin. I have had my website have things magically disappearing, (I would like to blame the squirrels in the eves but I think it was me not paying attention to a line of code!) Geoff playing a new video game that has me ready to tear my hair out with all the gunfire, a cat that will not stop yowling for attention for no reason (we give her attention, she is just a bitch) and frankly I have lost perspective and needed to regroup, so I put on my best bonnet and grabbed my Kindle and reread the first in this fun and fantastic series because I needed to remember why I love reading! So everyone grab a mason jar and pass it this way, the sweet tea is on me! (You didn’t think I would forget a recipe now would you?)

I’m locked & loaded with 2 books, 2 liters & a lot of DIY microwave popcorn

I am packing for polar bear today folks! Zombie-free zone today at the cabin! Plus some people were wondering if I ever was going to cook again! (I posted my kitchen sink to Instagram…it is not pretty) I have cooked, the problem is that I posted 2 blogs with no food, unless you count the pastry chef’s brains that his sous chef was chowing on when we made it to the ball!

Allie Taylor is the leading lady in J.C. Andrijeski’s – Rook and the other Allie’s War series. After reading the book I was struck with her love of coffee, one I share. So I decided to ask Allie  how and why coffee was important to her and as a treat for us she also shares how she makes it!

Maple Bacon Beer Jam (Recipe)

Posted by on Dec 18, 2011 in Bacon, Cabin Cooking, Dessert, DIY Basic Recipes, Pork | 1 comment

bacon jamYes another delightful recipe with that lovely taste you experienced with my Maple Bacon Donuts! It is because I love you all that I share this incredible flavorgasm and because I promised a recipe a day till Christmas! The original recipe is actually from a Martha Stewart cookbook and for a slow cooker. It includes most of the below, but I didn’t have a crock pot at the time so I recreated it to work on the oven.

The ingredients also are varied as her recipe only calls for 1 lb of bacon. Hello, one POUND only? HAH not on my watch people! During the holidays I double this and give it to friends for presents. I haven’t done this in a while because I “misplaced” the recipe. I have been searching high and low for this and where was it to be found? Well in the middle of my Chinese Food cookbook OF COURSE! (Only in my world does this kind of filing of recipes make sense, I would try  to explain it but there are certain rules about how long a blog post should be…) Thankfully a friend from Anchorage reminded me how much I love this by mentioning the Steward Cafe serves this, I am sure mine is MUCH better *wicked grin*. I assure you this is amazing.

DIY Pepper Vodka and the Perfect Bloody Mary!

Posted by on Dec 11, 2011 in Cabin Cooking, DIY Basic Recipes | 2 comments

Though I no longer have my Sunday morning Bloody Mary, I still make and keep DIY Pepper Vodka on my shelf for a myriad of recipes, including my Vodka Sauce. Vodka is used in many recipes, not just drinks. Vodka is one of those alcohols that is rated odorless and colorless but in truth it does have a flavor. This is why though as an Alaskan, Monarch© Vodka has it’s place it does not belong in this particular recipe.
