A Hot Potato Bite Mashup Recipe & Review of “Vampire Code” by @CeliaBreslin

Vampires Code by Celia Breslin

I pride myself at being able to review a short story, this one is 4,000 words and has left me with a big challenge. So I thought it would also be fun to have the author give us even more teasers about the vampires of HAVEN, the full length novel this story prequels. Plus it’s a Monday, and well I love having food on Mondays so how about a tiny bit of a .. nibble.. I mean this story is a tease, so why not give you a bit of a tease for food? How about I give you a BITE to eat! Then you can read my review, her top ten things about the vampires of Haven and also have a shot at a great giveaway!

Princess Red Potato Bites

Adapted and retested in the cabin using several different recipes including as this one at Loaded Baked Potato Bites | foodraf.

Directions

  • 1 pound small red potatoes, washed
  • light virgin olive oil
  • sea salt, fresh ground pepper, red pepper
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1/3 cup of sour cream
  • 6 strips of thick cut bacon, cooked crips and crumbled
  • 4-5 green onions, sliced thin, just middle green down to white.
  • shredded pepperjack (if you are a fresh turned vamp [aka wussy butt] you can use monterary jack)
  • shredded smoked chedder (again see above and just use sharp cheddar)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400`F.
  2. Line baking sheet with foil and brush with olive oil (I do not like canned oil, bluck!).
  3. Cut potatoes in half and scoop out the inside leaving just enough on the edges so they won’t collapse. (I use a grapefruit spoon, seriously it is perfect for this wee ones.) Place the scoops in a saucepan and add just enough water (salt it a tiny bit) to cover the potatoes, turn on medium- high and par-boil for 12-15  minutes (till they are just fork tender and do NOT turn this on high.. look up par-broil people.. you can Google, I know you can!)
  4. Put the potato skins, cut side up, on prepared baking sheet, brush with olive oil, season with salt & pepper, put into oven and bak for 15-20 minutes (again till they are tender and just starting to wrinkle but the sides are not collapsing and you don’t want them to crisp).
  5. Shred your cheeses and blend them together, you probably are going to want to do about 1/2 a cup each.
  6. In the meantime, drain the boiled potatoes, and combine them with butter,  sour cream and ground red pepper (don’t over do it, a nice dash or two will give it that Master vamp BITE but still have the innocence the Princess can handle). Mash it by hand or a hand mixer till smooth (but don’t whip it, we are just wanting them to submit to our will not be conquered).
  7. Using a wooden spoon (gently you want to stir, don’t stab, vampires don’t like stabby things) stir in the bacon and onions evenly. (save a bit of the green onions for garnishing, just a little nibble) Salt and pepper to taste here, and do it a touch at a time, don’t forget to taste as you add. You are about to add cheese, to much salt can be overkill!
  8. Remove skins from oven and while they are still hot, using two teaspoons,  fill with mashed potato mixture. Top with the cheese mixture and place back in oven for 4.5 minutes (I use my handy dandy pastry cream filler to fill my potatoes to make them look good.) At the same time place your serving platter on the top rack of your oven, this will warm the plate and allow your bites to remain warm. No one likes cold snacks, right?
  9. Serve warn, lick fingers, moan a lot and make sure you say thank you Ma’am, may I have another……. BITE!

My Teaser of a Review

Licking sour cream off my fingers and dabbing bacon grease behind my ear* Hey guys! Time for my review of this teaser-of-a-read! how do I review this? First, yes I liked it, seriously it was pretty damn good! I love short stories, and this is constructed to do one thing, get me to go read Haven. It’s a short you can read on one of your 15-minute breaks at work. Twenty pages, around 4,000 words, It dragged me in, well perhaps I’m adding a bit of drama, because frankly *ohhh look one with extra bacon* drama swirls around Jonas, the leading man of this tale. It is his job to lead us all into the world of Haven where Carina Tranquilli is no longer  his slumbering warrior princess; owner of a popular night club and dealing with twelve years of memory loss. The author did her job, I wanna know what’s next! *popping another potato bite in …ohhhh pepper jack, yummy* anywho.. the story..

We do not actually “meet” Carina in this story, we meet another player, we meet the undead man in the shadows who watches over her and protects her until her destiny can be fulfilled. At least this is what I think it is … what it is *shoving another princess bite in my mouth … looking at the almost-empty plate* huh wow, not going to forget this recipe anytime soon..  is one heck of a teaser!  Jonas? He pretty much has  badassery down. He knows how to punish those who screw up.. all I can say, if I was under the code? I would not break it, that is unless the first punishment was a spanking… *gigglingOh.. look this one has extra cheese on top!

Top Ten Teasers: the Vampires of Haven By Celia Breslin

vampire-dividersm

1All Haven vampires are undead. They can make their hearts beat, their lungs breathe, that is, if they’re in the mood to do so. It amuses them to play human every once in a while.

2The sun is not their friend. Deadly with prolonged exposure. Most old ones can tolerate a bit of rays but don’t expect to see them on a sunny beach. They prefer foggy cities like San Francisco.

3Silver sucks. Not lethal but annoyingly painful. Shoot a vampire with silver and expect wicked payback. While it will knock out a young vamp for a bit, the old ones will shake it off in a heartbeat and eviscerate you where you stand. I know, that’s harsh but Jonas told me to warn you — he’s old and cranky like that!

4Human blood is the beverage of choice and in fact, the only blood on which they can survive. Animals? Not useful. Though Jonas does miss bacon.

5The Haven vamps indulge in alcoholic beverages from time to time. Jonas tells me he, along with Carina’s man, Alexander, are Scotch whiskey men. Thomas prefers brandy. Team Evil’s Dixon insists it’s stout or nothing.

6All vampires possess a basic set of vamp-y skills including heightened senses and super strength. They can glamour and compel most humans and some vampires but cannot glamour or compel werewolves.

7Vampires typically run in gangs, with the occasional free agent roaming about. The Tranquilli vampire cosca (Italian for “gang” or “clan”) is the most powerful of them all.

8Older vamps can hurt/kill/torture with power alone, though they do love to get physical. Jonas, aka The Executioner, is quite fond of his swords.

9Elder vamps can communicate telepathically with members within their own cosca and with fellow older vamps regardless of cosca affiliation.

10Some of the ancients can fly and often possess a unique skill not necessarily associated with vampirism. As Thomas likes to say,Gifted in life. Gifted in death.”

Clothed in darkness and power, Jonas watches Carina from the periphery of her life. With all that he is, he secretly protects his young charge from harm. Only three months remain in the twelve-year prohibition forbidding contact with his little warrior when he fails.

Abducted from her dance club, Carina suffers a vicious attack by a newly-turned vampire. Jonas’s retribution for the lowly spawn’s code violation is swift and brutal, and merely the beginning of his vengeance. Fineas, the uninitiated newling’s maker, has committed the greater offense. And Jonas intends to make him suffer.

  1. Hi Kriss,
Thanks for hosting us on your blog! Jonas is quite intrigued by your potato (with bacon) recipe and a wee bit jealous that I get to try it, lol. Bacon makes everything better, doesn’t it? 🙂

  2. Okay, that recipe is totally mouth watering, now I know what I will be making this weekend. Vampire Code sounds like a great read.

    • Hi Jean,
Me, too – looking forward to trying the recipe!

      • You can do this with big potatoes, obviously. You can even do them with a microwave, proof today

      • But I did the BITES because of the obvious and a princess would never cram a full sized potato wedge in her mouth.. snickering.

  3. Sounds great, can’t wait to try it. Thanks for sharing Vampire Code and the giveaway. Sounds like a book that I would love to take a bite out of. evamillien at gmail dot com

    • Hi Eva,
Potatoes, bacon, and badass vampires, what more do we need? lol 🙂

  4. Sounds great and love the colours of the cover. Also I’m hungry for potato now.

    • Hi Jess,
I like my cover, too. Was glad it included the Golden Gate Bridge since my vampire world is set in San Francisco.
