Leanne Herrera’s Intergalactic Kitchen Show! – A Fourth-Wall Friday Special
Fourth-Wall Friday Cooking!
A First in Fourth-Wall Friday History! A special cooking session between one of the urban fantasy and romance authors, Leanne M. Herrera.
Late last year I had a special delivery of salted caramel candy sent to Leanne’s abode where she stashes it hidden amongst her unmentionables Within was a very special nanobot programmed to detect intergalactic time and space travel, I would catch this on tape to be aired at a later date, and early last week I was not disappointed. Not only did I get the characters from three of Leanne’s books, including her leading lady Anna from her first novel, Mirror Bound, I also was able to capture two others. I did my best to color coordinate their interesting conversation and Intergalactic cooking. The nanobot captured quick images of the festivities as it happened, if you follow along you will get a very special recipe from the hills of Kentucky for Space Cake, ENJOY a little Fourth-Wall Friday Fun!
It is 2:30 in the morning and my sweet tooth is screaming at me. I am supposed to be editing two books and the grammar issues are killing me. I stare at my computer and wonder what exactly I have in my kitchen that will allow me to put my sweet tooth to rest. I realize I have nothing. It is three weeks until payday and our groceries are slowly dwindling to nothing.
I know what I can do. I click some buttons on my keyboard and put myself right into a futuristic kitchen. I turn and look at the monitor that sits on the counter.
“Link are you here?”
“Yes Ma’am and how you are today?” she says as she brings her nearly human body from her cabinet and stands next to me.
“I am fine but I am craving some sweet bread.”
“I am sorry; I have no recipe for sweet bread. Is there something else I can get for you?”
“Can we call Anna and have her bring the stuff to make sweet bread? I know she will have a recipe.”
She nods and clicks some keys on the computer that I have just come from and I hear it say, “Calling Anna.”
There is no ringing sound coming from the computer but I hear someone pick up on the other end.
“Hello” comes the sweet southern voice of Anna on the computer.
“Hi Anna, it’s Leanne and Link here and we would like to get you to come and make sweet bread with us.”
“Hi Leanne. You need sweet bread? Hmmm let me think, I don’t have any made but I am sure Ma had a recipe for it somewhere. Let me look and see if it’s in the potion room.”
“Okay, why don’t you get the recipe and gather the ingredients and we will use some new technology to get you here in say twenty earth minutes.”
“Sounds interesting you will have to explain it to me when I get there. See you soon.”
For the next twenty minutes we clear off the counter and set up the portable teleport system that will bring Anna here, not only from a different world but from a different time as well. It uses the same technology that allowed us to talk to her so it should work. I am nervous though, because no one here has used it yet.
“Ripa is docking now this should be interesting. She is actually on time.”
Ripa parks her hover craft just as Link starts the process to bring Anna and her stuff here. The machine lets off a bright light and then after several loud beeps we see her coming onto the teleport pad with two huge bags of groceries.
“Hey Leanne, nice to see you again. Who is coming through the new gadget?”
“You can meet her in a second” I say just as excited as she is to actually see the technology I have only dreamed about work in front of me.
A very amazed Anna steps onto the Syperia and says “OMG this is so cool! This is almost as cool as when I got my elemental powers without all the work though!”
“Oh! You’re a witch? I heard about you from the library although I have never gotten to meet one. I am Ripa and I am a Tethra. It’s great to meet you.”
Link takes the bags from Anna and begins to unload and I just sit back and watch as the past meets the future. I am astonished that Ripa has not recognized the speech pattern yet as Anna comes from Ripa’s time. Then again she may not realize it because Anna has such a strong southern accent.
“I was born with abilities yes, and I knew that my Ma was a witch. It is difficult to explain. Um, what exactly is a Tethra?”
“She is from the past Ripa, you know the rules” Link said as she finally emptied the last bag and turned to Anna. “Okay I have no idea how to do this; this is very different from our food. Anna you are going to have to take over on the cooking.”
“Oh yeah the spice cake, I forgot all about why I was here. What kind of house is this anyway?” “It isn’t a house, it’s a pod. A compartment off of the space ship that brought me here to work. What year is it where you are at? I do not want to get into trouble for giving away too much. The rules suck but I guess someone has to pay attention to them.” Ripa said as she gave me a look. “She is from the twentieth century and you are not allowed to tell everyone that I suck at grammar. I am working on it”
Anna laughed and Ripa did too. “So I couldn’t find a recipe for sweet bread so we are going to kind of make a cake. It is the one Ma used to make when money was tight and food was scarce. I think ya’ll will like it.”
“Hey! Is that flour and milk and oh my God are those eggs?”
“Why of course they are. What planet are you from that you don’t have eggs, flour and milk?” “You haven’t told her where she is yet?”
“No, I forgot to tell her we took her to a different planet as well as a different time. I didn’t think about it honestly.”
“Yeah we know how you forget things. You are very much like the people you create.” Link scolded me.
“Okay so here is the deal, I come from the twenty-third century San Antonio Texas on earth and so I can completely understand how you wouldn’t understand being as someone jumped right in and didn’t tell you where or when you were. Hey Link! How about you let her see the scenery while we sort out the ingredients?”
The wall next to the eating area changed from opaque to see through and I watched a wide eyed Anna as she looked out in astonishment over the jewel toned landscape so different from her own. “This looks nothing like my Kentucky hills. Wow! Nothing is the even the right color.”
Anna took a folded piece of paper from her pocket and laid it on the counter. “We are going to need two big bowls please tell me you at least have dishes, because I didn’t bring any of those.”
“Yes Anna we have dishes and even baking things here. The food is different and the cooking style is different but if we want to make anything from scratch the preparation is basically the same.“ Link said with her computerized logic completely absent of her usual snark.
“Good, then let’s get started. In this bowl we need one cup of softened butter, one cup of sugar and one egg. They will need to be creamed together until everything is mixed together really well. Ripa you can do that part.”
“I will check it when you are done. I know how wonderful you are at cooking Ripa.” “Aw yes Links snark something I hate to love. Oh, how I miss it.”
“Alright you two save it for later, you have a guests now.” I said to the two of them.
“That is okay I am used to it, and I can dole it as well as take it. Leanne would you mind mixing in this bowl the three cups of flour and two tablespoons of baking powder. Link you can get the pan ready with this spray to keep the cake from sticking to the pan. I am going to get these apples ready to go in last.” We all started our jobs and I decided to have the two of them to tell each other about their stories.
“Why don’t the two of you tell each other about the stories you are in. This way everyone knows a little more about each other while we mix and prepare.” I say this hoping that they will open up to each other as they have opened up to me when I wrote their stories.
“Oh let me go first, I love telling stories.” Anna said as she began to wash the apples before she cut them up.
“I was born a twin, which seems to be a pattern in my family. My great-grandmother was a twin, then at least one every generation has a set of twins. Anyway, when we were little there was some problem with my mother and my grandmother, so my great-grandmother took us in. She was a witch and because of the problems with my mother, she chose to bind our powers to keep us safe from her. She wanted to steal our powers. It’s a long complicated tale so I won’t go all into the past. Basically, I came home to settle Ma’s (which is my great-grandmother) affairs because she had passed away. I sort of opened a can of worms and had to find a way to protect myself and our coven from my mother’s coven. It was a big mess.”
“It seems that we have some things in common, my story is complicated too. I was born on earth to humans and then because I could no longer live with their childish behavior after they divorced I joined the United Front Coalition. They are a company that could be compared to intergalactic ambassadors of sorts. I signed up with them at eighteen and this planet that we call Desdon is my first assignment. I was only supposed to be the assistant to the mission specialist or ambassador here, but after some incredible findings in my own story, I have ended up as a liaison. I won’t give it all away but I will tell you that my love interest is a shape shifter and also the alpha in this section of the planet.” Anna dropped a piece of apple on the floor and being the wonderful Syperia that it is, it sucked it right up. Anna stared at the floor wide eyed. “Um what the heck was that and where did the apple I drop go?”
“That would be the Syperia; it is one of the things that we gained from other planets by signing up with the coalition. It is like a carpet but living so we never have to vacuum it or clean it.”
“I want one, heck I need one with as many messes that I make at home, especially in the potion room. I am always spilling one thing or another. Okay Ripa, your bowl is ready and so is Leanne’s. Leanne slowly pour your mixture into Ripa’s bowl, while Ripa stirs it together. Link grab the milk we are going to need it next.”
Once the mixture was mixed together, Anna instructed Link to pour the milk very slowly into the mix until she got it to kind of a cake batter thickness. Then she gently folded the apples and a ½ a cup of cinnamon to the mixture. Link brought the pan over to her and she pour the batter in and handed it back to link. Link put it into the computerized oven and then put in all the ingredients. She did not have a regular oven in the pod so it would have to be cooked a bit differently than on earth.
“At home I would put that in at 375 degrees until I can get a butter knife through it cleanly. I am not sure how you are going to cook it in that.”
“I assure you miss that it will take a lot less time here than it does at home. We should have cake as soon as the tea is done.”
Link began getting out cups and placing it on the table and I started placing them and forks around the table when I realized that she had put to many cups out. “Why are there five cups when only three of us are capable of drinking?”
She didn’t have to answer because the teleport machine flashed a bright light and started making noise. We all looked on with anticipation as a Latina girl with brightly colored hair stumbled into the room followed by another woman with very short dark hair and a scar from the middle of her forehead to her cheek.
“Hello everyone!” Said the bright-haired girl, “I am Cia and this lovely lady is Safire, we are two of Leanne’s new characters and this party just got interesting.” She then pulled out her chair and started to sit but missed the seat and banged her head on the table as she fell to the floor and landed on her behind.
I rolled my eyes, “Link get the first aid kit. This is going to get interesting.”
