Leave it to a Winter Knight – “Cold Days” to get some Forenza in my life!

Cold Days by Harry DresdenCold Days by Jim Butcher

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Build a man a fire and he’s warm for a day,” I said. “But set a man on fire and he’s warm for the rest of his life. Tao of Pratchett.” and of Harry too…

I waited a long time for #13 (Ghost Stories)and was frustrated after reading it. Sure, I enjoyed it it was awesome, not as good as #12 but par with the series. It left me worried about Cold Days because now he was to be a creature of Mab, and we had been, as readers left hanging. I enjoyed the anthology Side Jobs much more as a waiting waiting much better than Windows ME while waiting for a real book to come out kind of waiting. But I was left hanging with Ghost Story, it left me hungry. However, Cold Days? A perfect winter read (hehe get it .. winter.. cold.. Winter Knight.. bah you guys are no fun!) It ended up being the perfect meal and a total five star Harry Dresden reading experience!

“My brother the . . . geosexual?”

(Kindle shared Thomas to Harry)

Immediately afterwards I am sitting there, my need to be left with the perfectly filled “belly” of adventure, humorous and off kilter urban chivalry sated. I had been worried Jim Butcher was going to go the way of a 90’s Theme restaurant, just running out of fancy things to hang on Harry’s wall of fame. No more unique stories to tell, but nope! The fear of him running out of ridiculous seeming challenges, which seemed a possibly for bit with the last couple of Dresden File  installments, was squashed as I finished this. Sure there is a classic cliff hanger, but I am totally happy where it left off. Epic meal with an epic ending and a feeling of contentment and peace for me, the reader.

“After it had been boiling for a few minutes, I took it off the fire, added a splash of cold water from the pump to settle the grounds, and poured myself a cup.”

(RECIPE from Harry, and how it is DONE! True Cowboy coffee (and mushers too!) shared and noted

So if you are like me, like your  epic crazy, snarky and smart. With just the right  flavor cooked up into a tale that took my breath away just enough balanced with just the right dash of pow! I got it! I needed to know we would be getting more. I got it. I needed to be OK with how things were going go turn out…I did and with no indigestion, no feelings of frustration…this was by far the best one since Changes!

‘ “Whatever happened to Ia, Ia, Cthulu fhtagn?” I muttered. “No one has a sense of style anymore.’ ”

(sayeth Harry at the last standoff at Deadreach)

Cold Days (The Dresden Files, #14)

After being murdered by a mystery assailant, navigating his way through the realm between life and death, and being brought back to the mortal world, Harry realizes that maybe death wasn’t all that bad. Because he is no longer Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard.

He is now Harry Dresden, Winter Knight to Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness. After Harry had no choice but to swear his fealty, Mab wasn’t about to let something as petty as death steal away the prize she had sought for so long. And now, her word is his command, no matter what she wants him to do, no matter where she wants him to go, and no matter who she wants him to kill.

Guess which Mab wants first?

Of course, it won’t be an ordinary, everyday assassination. Mab wants her newest minion to pull off the impossible: kill an immortal. No problem there, right? And to make matters worse, there exists a growing threat to an unfathomable source of magic that could land Harry in the sort of trouble that will make death look like a holiday.

Beset by enemies new and old, Harry must gather his friends and allies, prevent the annihilation of countless innocents, and find a way out of his eternal subservience before his newfound powers claim the only thing he has left to call his own…His soul.

About the Series

The Dresden Files are Jim’s first published series, telling the story of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, Chicago’s first (and only) Wizard P.I.

Jim has commented in the past that he’s got ideas for running the series into the lower twenties, at least — here’s hoping the publisher agrees!

The Science Fiction Book Club has gathered many of the Dresden books into hardcover omnibuses: Storm Front, Fool Moon, and Grave Peril are collected in Wizard for Hire; Summer Knight and Death Masks are inWizard By Trade; Blood Rites and Dead Beat are in Wizard at Large; and Proven Guilty and White Night make up Wizard Under Fire. No plans have been announced for subsequent omnibuses.

  1. I am so excited about the new installment and cannot wait for the budget gods to give me the go ahead. Thank you for sharing today and making me smile 🙂

    • I have a few authors I always pre-order and I do not care about budgets. Butcher, Simon Green, James Rollins. The rest, it is budget, no matter what, I am SO behind on my Mercy books, and all my Ilona Books.. I am so sad.. but hey.. three, Geoff said I got to pick three I can ALWAYS have!

  2. Husband got this for Christmas even though he had already read it from the library. Now it is sitting on the ‘to read’ shelf that I never seem to get to because of my stack of review books. Main reason I am NOT accepting more stuff for review this year – too many books like this that I’ve left sitting on the back burner. Thanks for letting me know it is awesome. If I ever get myself out from under I’ll move it to the top of the shelf 🙂

  3. I still haven’t read “Ghost Stories” OR “Side Job”… they’re just SITTING THERE, STARING AT ME… But I want to have this one in hand before I read them. In fact, ideally, I’d have the entire set as e-books so I don’t have to go digging through the entire place to find where my husband left my hardcovers after reading them, as he tends to just leave them laying wherever they fall when he’s done. Annoying, that… 🙂 I have a system of piles, however – he’s always confused by it, no matter how many times I explain, “No, THAT pile is for books I’ve already read! THOSE piles are for the books I still need to! Gheesh!!”

    Ia, Ia, Cthulhu fhtagn!

    • I know I have them all in hard cover and only a few in ebook because I was reading them obviously in hard cover. I will get them all in ebook. YOU REALLY should read them in a row, only because to see Harry develop into what he is by now is stunningly awesome!
