Musing Mondays – My favorite Snack Food While Reading (Recipe & Rambling)

Musing Mondays {Aug 13th}

Musing Mondays is a weekly event hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading. Each week MizB asks a book related question and bloggers answer with their thoughts about the given topic.

Do you snack while you read?  If so, what is your favorite reading snack?

I am glad this came when it did because I am sitting here miserably sick, yes again. It seems when your body is forced to endure almost three weeks of prednisone  treatments your immune system SUFFERS.. gee really? Well I am currently suffering from a horrible infection and the antibiotics are not working so the doctor is waiting to see if we need Cipro again. OK JUST bury me because I am not going to make it to my 45th birthday anyway… but back to the question on snacking! (PSST do not forget Kingdom is FREE today through Wednesday 8-15 too!)

OH goodness YES! I love my popcorn, and if I am not eating something involving bacon .. wait I do add bacon to my popcorn too… sometimes or my bacon salt… ANYWAY, I make a big ol’ bag or two of microwave popcorn. BUT WAIT, before you start yelling at me about cancer, I do it myself! Most of the time I just throw 1/2 in a bag and pop as is. SOMETIMES if I am feeling frisky, I toss it in a bowl with a drizzle of oil to help the popping along and add to the flavor, but it is not necessary.

I also love LOVE skittles! So my lovely man will bring home a big ol’ bag of skittles, and always makes sure I have tea bags so I can make sweet tea. I make Southern Style Sweet Tea and I add my Lavender or Anise Sugar to it to give it a special PIZZAZ (click on the links for those recipes). Wanna make your own popcorn? Check out the recipe below. It will also save you about 95% of the price of microwave popcorn! 1 lb. bags last at least 2 weeks at my house (and I eat popcorn about every other day!)

DIY MICROWAVE POPCORN

-1/2 cup white popcorn kernels (they tend to have a higher pop to unpop ratio)

– brown paper lunch sack

– scotch tape or duct tape or even a bandaid (I have used them all!)

– 1 1/2 tbsp butter

– fine ground sea salt (regular ol’ Morton salt is fine, but I love me some Sea Salt and mine is Morton’s!)

– garlic powder

Take 1/2 cup of popcorn and pour into the top a brown paper lunch sack not unfolding or expanding. (I use large just in case they actually all pop!)

Shake a bit till they are settled flat and transfer into your microwave

Most microwaves have a popcorn button, just click that. my microwave is a 1100 watts and it pops for 2 min 15 sec on high but listen carefully and when it starts to slow down take it out. This may take a few tries to get right (you are going to not want to go to long because you will never get that smell of burnt popcorn out of the air.)

Pour into a bowl and if you are like me and much on it a lot or have a man-beast who eats twice what you do, pour another 1/2 cup in the same bag and do it again!

Put butter in your microwave safe butter-melter (see how fancy mine is?) and melt it for 30 seconds if soft and 45 if straight out of the icebox (do NOT use margarine people, that is NOT butter and will wilt that popcorn to a disgusting soggy mess. Better to just go without and it still tastes fantastic plus it is LOW CAL)

Pop a handful in your mouth and sit down to finish reading this blog post

What’s your favorite snack to eat while reading?

  1. I like popcorn but not the little kernal thingys that get in your teeth I just like my popcorn plain. Lavender and Anise sugar I must try that I bet it’s fantastic. Feel better bunneh girl and yes everyone get Kingdom for free today plus enter the giveaway

  2. Oh, goodness me, why did you need to take prednisone for that long? That stuff is nasty, NASTY, nasty! My mom had chronic hypereosinophilia for the last 20 years of her life and was pretty much on that crap constantly – did you also know it leeches calcium from your bones? Yuck. I’ve had to take it occasionally for lung inflammation – I hate it HATE IT I TELLS YA!! So sorry 🙁

As for me, I like my pistachios! I love popcorn, but have diverticulosis, so I can’t have it ’cause the kernels could get stuck down in there and cause a diverticulitis flare-up, and I really do NOT ever want to go through THAT again – it’s highly unpleasant.

I hope you feel better – Cipro isn’t much better than prednisone in my book 🙁

  3. I am going to try your popcorn, Thanks.
Anybody who knows me can tell you my required snack for reading and reviewing is Doritos! They are a must have! My dog Quigley looks at me funny if I don’t have any!
    Show me some love!

  4. you’re a great person.
