5 minutes in a mini-mart… Interview with ‘Days with the UnDead’ author Julianne Snow

We all know it may be ‘MINI’ but we all spend more then five minutes in the mini-mart before paying for gas trying to pick out junk food or figure out which energy drink you will use to embalm yourself today! BUT WHAT in the world does a mini-mart have to do with Zombies! Well keep reading! This is the second in a three-part stop on Julianne’s blog tour here at Cabin Goddess. The last will be my review of the great first in this series.

For those that are stopping by for the first time, Julianne is someone I consider a great friend, someone whom I would choose to be part of my survival team and the best thing is she is the author of this festive first in a series introducing you to a fun and terrifying tale of  survival, Days with the Undead!

EXCERPT: “The Undead will eventually find you though if you stop. I believe that with all of my being; nowhere is truly safe. Given that belief, I wonder sometimes why we keep moving. Wouldn’t it be better for us to just pick a place in the countryside somewhere and fortify a house? The problem with that idea is that there are a number of people that haven’t seen the wisdom in getting out of the way of the Undead. It’s hard to know what the correct decision to make in this situation is. In many cases, you’re either damned if you do or conversely damned if you don’t.”

So what would Julianne do with five minutes in a mini-mart? To find out  keep reading! But hurry, the horde is coming people and I wanted y’all to know what our visiting expert Julianne Snow has to say about some of the questions I had her ponder. You never know when these expert opinions will come in handy.

PLUS you have more chances to win a free book, if you entered before, and if you haven’t hop on the survival train, this book belongs in your gear! One of the questions I asked Julianne could win you the book! Read on McGuff!

Julianne Snow – Author of ‘Days with the Dead’

3 PART INTERVIEW

BOOK QUESTIONS

As with you, so many people are interested in Zombies these days why do you think that is?

I think that Zombies represent society in a small way. They were once us and I know from my own standpoint that they are some of the scariest monsters out there. Why is that? It’s the reflection of ourselves that we see in their faces. Sure, they don’t remember what it is to be human but having once been so, it reminds us all that we are only one bite away from becoming the monster as well.

The book has a lot of technical in-depth procedural aspects to the story, what kind of research did you have to do?

I didn’t do any research at all to be perfectly honest. Well, that’s not entirely true either – I did have to research the roads and highways in the US in order to get them right. My understanding of a decomposing body comes from my education in forensics and everything else is pretty much just from my head. My mind is a repository of facts and trust me, that helps when you’re writing a tale.

What was the hardest thing you had to write about in the story as in which ‘day’ was the hardest tale to tell?

Days 17 through 19 were hard to write from a psychological standpoint. It was the first time that the group really spent any time with people who were not willing to fight for survival. It was hard to capture both sides to that story and write it from the POV of someone who wants to survive so badly that she’ll do just about anything to make it happen. Days 28 and 29 were also hard – it’s never easy to write conflict.

What character is your favorite to write about?

I absolutely loved the curve-ball that happened when I thought of adding Lily and Liam to the mix. They offer a sense of hope that you just can’t find within a world full of the Undead. Their story was a hard one but it shows a resilience that needed to be added.

What is your ultimate goal with the series since it is far from done?

I want Days with the Undead to be something that Zombie aficionados read for the sheer joy of reading. There are so many stories left in me and I have many different avenues that I want to explore before I hang up this particular hat.

WHAT IF” QUESTIONS

If you could pick five other people to be part of your group of survivors who would you pick and why?

That is a super hard question – there are so many people that I think would make for an awesome group. I don’t know any of these people as of yet but they are the type of people that I would want along with me. The first would be someone that was intimately familiar with firearms. If one jams, I want someone around who can fix it or can tell me what types of ammo can be safely used in numerous kinds of guns. The second is an expert on hand to hand combat. Let’s face it, we’re all going to need lessons and it’s best to figure out what we can do to protect ourselves with someone else around. The next type of person that I would want to bring along with me is a mechanic for obvious reasons. If you need a vehicle fixed or rigged to work so that you can get away, I want that person on my team. As for the fourth, I would like to have a doctor or paramedic along for the ride since you never know when you’re going to need them to mend a broken leg or dig a bullet out of your backside. The last type of person that I would want with me would have to be a botanist. This may seem like an odd choice but it’s really not. A botanist would be able to tell me which plants are edible and which ones can be used for medicinal purposes. All of these specialties would be invaluable to have as a part of your team – will I be lucky enough to snag them when the world goes to hell? Probably not. Guess it’s time to start studying!

You have one backpack and five minutes in a mini-mart what do you grab? (Post Z-day breakout, the horde is out there)

Bottled water, protein bars, matches, and chewing gum. Simple, yes; but as you said, the horde is out there.

Where do you think the safest place will be to head if there is a breakout and why?

There isn’t going to be a safe place in my honest opinion. I would likely head north as that would be the area with the lowest population density. Lower population density would mean that there would be less people to attract the Undead and chances are, it would be just a little bit safer for the moments that it would take to put a plan into action. You might even have time to dig in and fortify a homestead or other building.

Would you trip someone and sacrifice them to the hands (or mouths) of the horde if it was between you living or dying? (Go ahead and justify this hehe)

That’s a super hard question – how can you know until you’re in that situation what you would actually do? I like to think that I would find another way but in the end, I might just be the person that someone else decides to sacrifice.

Your sister has survived but she would bring nothing to the table and would be a hindrance and possibly even endanger the group because she is irresponsible and has no survivor skills, would you still take her or would you leave her some food and a weapon and go?

Luckily, I don’t have a sister. But if I did, I would likely bring her along until the point that she proved to be completely useless. People have a way of surprising you in times of stress and while I don’t look like I would have a tremendous amount of skill, I wouldn’t want someone sacrificing me or leaving me behind without at least waiting to see what I had to offer.

  1. Idk about safest but probably the most safe over others at least I’d find myself a yacht . Not the biggest but nice size, stock up on food ammo, machete one of those doo dads to turn salt water into drinking water and some fishing rods and bam I’d sail.

    • The idea of getting on the water is a good one – once you get on the water, where would you go?

  2. This book sounds good!

5 things: Water, jerky, lighters/matches, Payday candy bars, & duct tape.

Assuming zombies can’t swim or last in water, I’d find one of many islands in the Pacific.

    • OH my sweet.. you have to read this book… you will find it very… unnerving what and how and where they can survive… well maybe.. hmmm giggling DUCT TAPE FOR THE WIN!

  3. Geoff says 2 road survival kits, all the NO DOZ on the shelf, all the first aid stuff he can stuff, (five minutes all that stuff is in the same place) peanuts, jerky, protein bars and whatever water can fit! (mind you it took him 15 minutes to explain the reasons why etc.. think I will survive with him?)

  4. Ya know… When I see zombies in movies, I often think, “Hmmm, they look familiar.” I think they look like some people I used to see when I was out partying it up in my younger days. 😉

    • ROFLMAO OMG ANITA ROFLMAO I almost wet myself laughing so hard.. OH OH OH

      • Hahahaha! I just thought I’d share that little bit of info with you. 😉

  5. If a loved one turned into a zombie, could I kill him/her? Hmmm… Yeah! Duh! I wanna kill some of ’em now! LOL!

  6. I’d take food and water. And, a gun, ammo, a few knives … oh and chocolate, definitely chocolate!

    • Which question was that for Ritesh?
      Show me some love!

      • “You have one backpack and five minutes in a mini-mart what do you grab? (Post Z-day breakout, the horde is out there)”

  7. “You have one backpack and five minutes in a mini-mart what do you grab? (Post Z-day breakout, the horde is out there)”

I’d grab the employee to use as a shield while I kick it outta der! 😉

Okay, for the actual backpack, I’d grab some smokes cuz God knows I’d be stressed out. I’d grab some food, some toilet paper, matches and lighters, and anything I could use to make a weapon (just in case I run out of bullets for the guns that are in my truck). Haha!

    • Oh wait… I’d use the employee as a shield WHILE I’m stuffing my backpack, and then while I’m kicking it outta der. Plus, I forgot the duct tape. Regardless of the emergency, you gotta have duck tape… period. Plus, I might need to duck tape a hostage. Well, ya never know!

      • either that or a new man, because we need to repopulate *ROFLMAO*

        • Ewwww! ROFL! Do we REALLY need to repopulate? Can’t we just be a race of Amazons? **SIGH** Okay– if we must repopulate, then that hostage better be at least 6’2″ ’cause I can’t be dealin’ with no shorties! To them I say, BE GONE!!!!

          • Yes I agree, my man is 6’3″ and I would not have any shorties either… BE GONE!

  8. “Your sister has survived but she would bring nothing to the table and would be a hindrance and possibly even endanger the group because she is irresponsible and has no survivor skills, would you still take her or would you leave her some food and a weapon and go?”

Yeah, I’d leave her! Thing is, I have a daughter to protect, so I’d leave behind anyone that was endangering my daughter and me. Now, I’d talk to her and give her a chance, but if she didn’t shape up after that, BE GONE!

  9. Hey Kriss– Since your rafflecopter hates me, it could just be me; but I haven’t received ANY notifications of replies to my posts. And yes, the box is checked to receive notification of follow-up comments by email. 🙁 Just letting you know.

  10. All of you have got some great ideas for items to stuff into my backpack… Totally wish I had thought of duct tape – even if you turn an ankle, duct tape will save your life!!
    Show me some love!

  11. Hand to hand combat expert is her second choice.
    Show me some love!
