Musing Mondays {March 19} Would you judge a book by it’s cover?

This week’s musing asks…

Musing Mondays is a weekly event hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading. Each week MizB asks a book related question and bloggers answer with their thoughts about the given topic.

Would you choose to review a book if its description sounded interesting but the cover was terrible?

I have this memory of kicking a piece of gum stuck to the indoor outdoor carpet sample I was sitting on in my elementary school Library afraid to look up because the scary lady just yanked a pretty book out of my hand and made all of us 1st grade children sit down and listen to a lecture.

Artondale Elementary School in Gig Harbor, WA had an evil librarian. She would not let you choose a book because you thought the cover was pretty, in fact she even covered books up with plain book covers so we would choose them because the content looked good, the story, NOT the cover. I still hear that woman’s voice in my head:

Never judge a book by it’s cover!!

I think because of this even though I hear her, no matter what when I try NOT to judge a book by its cover, no matter how good it sounds like it will be, I do not want to read it if the cover looks amateurish. How hard is it to design a cover in this day an age. Even if you do something simple with a bright color and a simple clip art with clear and concise font it’s better than creating some joke with broken pixels and a sloppy design. I realize not everyone has the talent, but there is enough people out there that will gladly barter for a free copy of the book in lieu for some work or design, especially those that are trying to break into cover design. The world of barter has always been a great place in any independent scene… goats, eggs, bread and sex.. oh wait not sex.. but you get what I am saying!

So that mean nasty librarian’s voice maybe branded in my mind and I may have some nightmares occasionally after throwing up a cover love piece, but I still will make my final choice to review based on the cover. Call me a cover whore, but I am an artist and I know what I like, even if it is just going to be on my Kindle. After all I am going to be posting the cover to my page, and who is going to want to read something that look like the chess club produced it after drinking Dad’s Creme de Menthe!

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your answer in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks! :D

  1. Omg Kriss is turning into grumpy old lady librarian! Nooooo you must join me in sexy librarianville where we like books with good blurbs AND book covers.

    • I SO LOVE YOU BUNNEH… LOL I am NOT.. I swear I am not (hiding my glasses and drying my index finger off) I swear!

  2. With you 100% got an illustrator to do my YA Fiction cover The Amber Room because of that very fact. Nice blog, Kriss. I like people who talk sense, so I’ll be popping in from time to time if that’s okay :)

  3. Thanks for visiting my MM. That sounds like a terrible experience! I can’t believe she took the time to cover up books to make you chose. It’s like going on a blind date, but with reading. And blind dates can be terrible haha.

  4. What a mean librarian. She should of been encouraging you to read regardless if it was because of a pretty cover or not. No wonder you have cover love nightmares!

  5. Great response! You’re right she is an evil librarian! I love covers and I wouldn’t know what to do if the librarian covered them with plain covers. Thanks for visiting!

  6. Sounds like you had an awful librarian Lol. Im surprised you still like to read.

  7. Love your answer! :) Even though I’ve read many great books with bad covers, I’m quite a cover whore too :/ It’s just sad if there’s no any kind of effort :(
Thanks for sharing, and thanks for stopping by! :)

    Monaliz @ Mind Reading?
