Could you really kill a Zombie? (Days with the Undead Book Tour & Give away)

Today I’m so very thrilled to be hosted by Kristine Morton! Kriss and I connected during the infancy of my web series. She is one of my most fervent supporters and I am thankful for her friendship. As I sat down to write a guest post for her I began to wonder…

Could You Really Kill A Zombie?
(guest post by author Days with the Undead, Julianne Snow)

The idea of a Zombie is an interesting concept. It goes against all that we know to be true about life and death. Even the term “Living Dead” is an oxymoron. Yet we’ve come to accept that it’s an actual possibility.

Let’s run this sucker down, just for fun.

We all like Zombies, right? We enjoy reading about them, writing about them, even watching them in films. Many of us even maintain that we would survive a Zombie attack if it were to happen to us. Under the right and favourable circumstances, of course. But is that the actual truth?

Could you really kill a Zombie?

Talking from a physical standpoint, I’m fairly certain that I could kill a Zombie. I have the requisite skills and the will to survive. On an emotional level, I’m not entirely sure that I would be able to look into the face of someone that I once loved, a face that has transformed into one of undead horror, and pull a trigger. Bludgeon them to the death with a blunt object. Or decapitate them with a single swing of the Katana that I purchased last week.

Does that make me weak-willed? Possibly. If a Zombie Apocalypse were ever to happen, how many of us bona fide Zombie enthusiasts would really have what it takes?

My guess – not that many.

We are a society made up of caring and conscientious people for the most part. That’s not a bad thing, mind you, but does it give us any kind of edge in a dying world?

If the world as we know it was to end and the dead were to walk the earth, it would, by default, harden each and every one of us. We’d stop trusting each other, worried that the meager supplies we’ve managed to scavenge together may be a source of contention. Leery of each and every person that we didn’t know, there is the chance we would isolate ourselves into smaller groups. Smaller groups do have a higher chance of survival; less people to protect, less people to attract attention and less people to fit into a stronghold that you will have to secure. Having a plan in place is optimal, but you’re still going to need to remain flexible and adapt to any situation that arises.

To expound further on the idea of adaptability, it’s going to be of the utmost importance if you’re going to have any shot at survival. Conditions are bound to change drastically at the drop of a hat and if you cannot react quickly, it could mean your death. At any moment a horde of Zombies could come calling, and if you don’t have the stones to do what you have got to do to stay alive, you may as well join them. Emotions aside, you’re going to have to do it.

You may just have to stare into the face of a once innocent child and do the right thing.

So I ask you again, could you really kill a Zombie? If your answer is no, perhaps you’d better start praying that it doesn’t come down to a life or death decision for you.

It was while watching Romero’s Night of the Living Dead at the tender age of 6 that solidified Julianne’s respect of the Undead. Since that day, she has been preparing herself for the (inevitable) Zombie Apocalypse. While classically trained in all of the ways to defend herself, she took up writing in order to process the desire she now covets; to bestow a second and final death upon the Undead.

As the only girl growing up in a family with four children in the Canadian countryside, Julianne needed some form of escape. Her choice was the imaginations of others which only fostered the vibrancy of her own.

Days with the Undead: Book One is her first full-length book, the basis of which can be found in her popular web serial of the same name. You can find Julianne’s The Living Dead of Penderghast Manor in the anthology Women of the Living Dead. Look for more of Julianne’s short stories in upcoming anthologies.

  1. Course I could kill a zombie hell if I was running from them with someone I loved, I’d love them but I’d trip them if need be. No way I’d end up a meat sack.

  2. If the dead ever do walk the earth can I be in your group?
Sounds like you’ve got it all planned out and the best chance of survival is with you. 😉

    • That’s entirely possible John-Paul! Would tell me about your skills before I decide for sure?

  3. I don’t think I could kill someone I loved, even if they had turned into a zombie. I’d just way away (OK, I’d run!) And Kriss, I am totally hanging around you in a zombie apocalypse!

  4. If it was to save someone else I loved, yes. But it would be very difficult!

    • Excellent Mary Ann! That’s the spirit! Just look at it as putting them out of their misery 🙂

  5. P.S. I follow via email. The entry form wouldn’t let me say that.

  6. Today I woke up from a nightmare in which I, along with a group of people that I may or may not now in real life had to get ready to fend off a horde of zombies. Thankfully, I woke up at the exact moment they surrounded the house… because I’m a coward even when sleeping and that was too damned scary!

I seriously think that in a zombie attack kind of situation, my life expectancy would be somewhere around 0.009%

    • Tonya! Thanks for checking out some of the other stops on my tour! There are times when I think I wouldn’t be effective in a Zombpocalypse but you never know until it happens! I’ve had dreams where I end up a Zombie – shameful but true 😉

      Julie

  7. I could kill a loved one. I love you bunneh but I’m not turning into a lurching rotting corpse sooner than I have to so yeah I’ll hack your head off. But you know I do it out of love.

Plus I’d get snack food high in calories and has tons of preservatives so it would keep. Doritos and such. Nom nom nom run run run!!!!!
