*picking chicken feathers from my hair* I just got back from a much needed break from the craziness this week and am finally sitting down to share my thoughts on another festive new addition to the Deadwood Mystery series. After pestering supporting her for months, Ann Charles‘ fans have finally gotten what they have been craving for, NO it is not the secret to the perfect caramel latte or how to get your grove on with a cell phone and bath bubbles! It is the chance for  more antics and fun with Violet “Spooky” Parker!

*handing everyone a bowl of Peanut Butter Fudge Ice Cream while settling down with a bowl for myself* I made it this morning in honor of Violet and to help channel my inner ghost magnet (of course you can make it, Ice cream is pretty easy wait and see) OK let’s talk about this book.

I know many of you have heard me go “THIS IS THE BEST.. blah blah blah, I SWEAR.. OMG.. BLAH BLAH BLAH” right? I know I tend to OVER dramatize things, but I really mean it AND I really want you guys to pay attention to me this week, starting with this new release.

Dead Case in Deadwood (Deadwood Mystery Series #3)

“Nothing good ever happens at the butt-crack of dawn. No doubt, the headless corpse on the autopsy table in front of me would agree.”–Violet Parker

Ann Charles (Author)

didn't like it it was ok liked it really liked it it was amazing (my current rating)  (no doubt about it for me full five stars)

Real estate agent, Violet “Spooky” Parker stumbles upon a body-part theft ring at the local funeral parlor and suspects her caustic coworker has a hand in it–or maybe a foot. Can Violet discover what’s in the crates the crooks are sneaking out of the mortuary in the dark of night? Or will she end up in one of them herself … in pieces?

Ann Charles has the “touch” when it comes to delivering the perfect blend of snarky realistic humor and fun. I fell in love with Violet and her twin 10 year-olds Layne and Addie with the first book in the series (well Addy and Layne if Addie has anything to say since she is 10 minutes older than Layne). I had picked it up on a lark when it was first released and ended up reading it instead of working on my classwork. It was well worth getting up at early to finish my work just to sit there and laugh so hard over and over again! How can you resist a little girl who liberates chickens and names them Elvis!

Violet is at the top of my list as favorite female protagonists. Most lead female characters in today’s genre fiction tend to be beautiful blonds with the prefect bodies and Kenjutsu form that look mighty fine with their rippled muscular bodies from the hours of Tai Chi with some ancient monk up in their secret mountain hideout. It is nice, occasionally and though I do read those books I tend not to admit to doing so.

With Violet, you get a real woman struggling to support her children despite dealing with ghosts, misogynistic co-workers, crazy sex-addicted senior citizens, pet chickens and children who like to dig up bones in the back yard. Her boobs are sagging a bit, she still carries around her baby fat and her hair maybe blond, but it certainly doesn’t lay perfect and is constantly looking like Elvis (the chicken) helped style it! Her ghost smelling secret boyfriend finds her sexy, doesn’t mind a bit that occasionally she likes to snuggle up with a bowl of ice cream instead of him and that she sleeps in an Elvis t-shirt and boxer shorts (well he thought it was slinky satin nightgown but I digress).

One way these wonderful books work is each ends with a bang and starts with a bang. Which is why you will have fans saying things like this in their reviews -

…And of course the end leaves you wishing the next book was ready to be read!! I am dying a slow death and may survive only if the 4th book comes out soon!!!

When I opened up the book and read the first sentence with her standing over a headless corpse (who was found clutching her business card) at the “butt-crack of dawn” I laughed so loud the cat ended up under the bed!. Violet still was struggling to keep her job and this time it was do or die hour. The little bit of sweat left on her freshly waxed lip was not from the caramel latte she just picked up, it was the fact that if she not only sell the houses she had on the market, but =she had to bring in an even bigger fish. So when an Abe Lincoln stepped into Calamity Jane Reality and asked if she would help him buy the hotel for sale in town and she asked which one… Murphy peeked out of his law office waving his magical gavel and Abe answered “the haunted one.”

The pace is fast, the dialogue is witty, smooth and natural. I can totally believe it all! Ask my friends heck read my blog! I have conversations like Violet has (both internally and out loud) ALL the time! For the true mystery aficionados this will keep you guessing and trust me, at the end will have you going “WHAT! WAIT when is book four coming out!” Heck, even the most despicable characters in the novel are so compelling you love to hate them! (Though I think in the end there is a special kind of justice for one specific one..*wagging finger* nuh uh uh! No spoilers my friends!)

Congratulations Ann Charles! I am one of your biggest fans. I was so thrilled to get the ARC to read, and so happy that I was given the chance to offer everyone an opportunity to win one of three, YES THREE copies of this novel (see below)! Stay tuned this review is one part of a series at Cabin Goddess! I got a chance to eavesdrop on an interview with violet and happened to make some Peanut Butter Fudge Ice Cream! I wouldn’t want to disappoint all of Team Violet! The ride is just beginning! Come back the rest of the week and catch more antics from my little corner of the world as I pull on my own purple cowboy boots and take on life with a smile and a spoonful of fun!

Now, if she could just convince her only buyer to stop rejecting vintage homes as if they’re haunted. Short on time and long on worry, she refuses to give up her dream of a fresh start in Deadwood. But with a malicious coworker trying to get her fired, a secret admirer sending her creepy messages, and a sexy stranger hiding skeletons in his closet, will Violet end up as one of Deadwood’s dearly departed?

WINNER of the 2011 Romance Writers of America® Golden Heart Award for Best Novel with Strong Romantic Elements

Someone is spreading rumors around Deadwood that Violet Parker likes to chat with dead folks.

With her reputation endangered, her bank account on the verge of extinction, and her career at risk of going up in flames, Violet is desperate. When the opportunity to sell another vintage home materializes, she grabs it, even though this “haunted” house was recently the stage for a two-act, murder-suicide tragedy.

Ghost or no ghost, Violet knows this can’t be as bad as the last house of horrors she tried to sell, but sexy Doc Nyce has serious doubts. Her only hope of hanging on to her job is to prove that the so-called, ghostly sightings are merely the eccentric owner’s optical delusions.

But someone-or something-in the house wants Violet stopped…dead.

  1. By not letting the buyer know it is haunted? Or, making a big show and get an exorcist to the site, put in extra special effects and convince him that the ghost has finally departed. No pun intended.

  2. Kriss, I LOVE this. You did a marvelous job on putting all of this together. Vi and crew can’t thank you enough for all of your support over the last year! (Although old man Harvey refuses to sign the thank you card unless you show him a little leg first. ;) )
    Hugs, Ann

    • Tell Old Man Harvey I got Vi to show him some leg and I caught it on film *waggling eyebrows* it will be up on Thursday, so have him ready to tweet it out!

  3. To sell a haunted house, I would totally play up the ghosts living in it. I would say they are friendly, they leaver you alone if you leave them alone. They just want to be part of the house and the family. It’s cool to live with a ghost, right?? Book Savvy Babe

  4. I would kindly ask the ghost to flash some boob because really who doesn’t want to live in a house with a flasher ghost. What I can’t be the only one!

  5. I’m pretty sure a haunted house would sell itself with all of the interest in the paranormal these days.

The first book in the series was excellent! I have been meaning to get a copy of the second book so I can review it on the blog. The fact that there is a third book now means I need to get caught up. Thanks for the giveaway Ann and Kriss

  6. I would sell it as a haunted house. There are people out there who are crazy enough to want to buy one. You could actually have a seance or a Halloween-type party (or two) to get people to the house and to simply publicize the sale. It might even be a lot of fun!

  7. I’d sell it as a tourist attraction! With the popularity of Ghost Hunters and all those other ghost shows you can tell it would work. Some people just like to get the crap scared out of ‘em! ;)
